John Bolton has spent nearly four decades saying “yes” to opportunities in deathcare, according to a profile published on CemeteryVision.com.
His journey began in cemetery maintenance, cutting grass and digging graves at a Tennessee cemetery, before advancing through sales, administration, supplier leadership and cemetery development.
Today, he serves as vice president of operations for development at Park Lawn Corp. and was recently installed as president of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association.
Along the way, Bolton has become one of the profession’s most influential thinkers, helping launch initiatives such as DEAD Talks, ICCFA’s Graduate School and the ICCFA Experience.
In the in-depth profile, Bolton shares why he believes cemeteries must do more than simply educate consumers. “Every cemetery that is successful,” he said, “not only educates people through its marketing, but also has something to market.” He argues that creating meaningful spaces, improving curb appeal and helping families understand their memorialization options are critical to long-term success.
Bolton also highlights the profession’s need to embrace technology, attract younger workers and adapt to changing consumer expectations. His guiding philosophy? “Learn to guide, not just provide.”
The feature also explores Bolton’s remarkable rise from cemetery laborer to industry leader, his work with Matthews International, Blackstone Memorial and Park Lawn, and the faith-driven mindset that has shaped his career.
As ICCFA president, Bolton hopes to encourage professionals to meet families where they are and continue evolving to serve the next generation.
