For years, Google Business Profile has been something funeral homes and cemeteries updated manually. You added your hours, uploaded photos, responded to reviews and listed the services you wanted potential families to see.

That is changing.

Google is increasingly using artificial intelligence — powered by Gemini — to better understand local businesses by analyzing their websites, customer reviews and other online signals. In some cases, Google is now generating service descriptions and listing services on Business Profiles based on what its AI believes a business offers, rather than relying solely on what the owner manually entered. At the same time, Google is expanding Gemini’s integration with Google Business Profile, allowing AI to analyze reviews, answer questions and even recommend updates to listings.

For funeral homes and cemeteries, this represents both an opportunity and a potential headache.

The Good News

Google’s AI is becoming much better at understanding what your business actually does.

Instead of simply categorizing you as a “Funeral Home” or “Cemetery,” Gemini can recognize much more specific offerings by reading your website, customer reviews and other public information.

That could include services such as:

  • Green burial.
  • Cremation with memorial services.
  • Veteran burial assistance.
  • Mausoleum entombment.
  • Celebration of Life planning.
  • Pet memorial services.
  • Cremation jewelry.
  • Preneed planning.
  • Livestreamed funeral services.
  • Monument cleaning and restoration.

Those detailed service descriptions can help your business appear for long-tail searches that families increasingly perform.

Someone may no longer search simply for “funeral home near me.”

Instead, they might ask Google:

“Who offers green burial near me?”

Or:

“Which cemetery installs cremation memorial benches?”

Or:

“Where can I preplan my funeral online?”

If Google’s AI accurately understands what you offer, your Business Profile may appear in searches you never intentionally targeted.

That’s a significant advantage.

But Here’s the Danger …

Artificial intelligence is only as good as the information it finds.

Sometimes it gets creative.

Google’s AI may infer that you provide a service because:

  • A customer mentioned it in a review.
  • It appeared briefly on a webpage.
  • It was referenced in a frequently asked question.
  • It was confused with a competitor’s offerings.

Imagine receiving phone calls asking about alkaline hydrolysis because one reviewer mentioned it — even though your funeral home doesn’t offer it.

Or families asking whether you sell cremation jewelry because Google associated that service with your profile after crawling your website.

Those misunderstandings don’t just waste time.

They can create disappointed families, frustrated staff members and potentially negative reviews from people who expected a service you never intended to advertise.

Don’t Assume Your Profile Is Correct

Many funeral professionals rarely look at their Business Profile once it’s been verified.

That’s no longer a safe approach.

Google has been steadily expanding AI throughout Search and Business Profile management. Business owners can now connect their Google Business Profile directly to Gemini, allowing the AI assistant to analyze customer feedback, suggest improvements and help manage listings conversationally.

As AI becomes more involved in understanding local businesses, it’s increasingly important to verify that Google’s interpretation of your services matches reality.

Every couple of weeks, log into your Google Business Profile dashboard and review:

  • Listed services.
  • Business description.
  • Categories.
  • Attributes.
  • Photos.
  • Questions and answers.
  • Review summaries.

If something is inaccurate, correct it immediately.

Think of it like proofreading your obituary page before publication.

A small error today can become a much bigger problem tomorrow.

Reviews Matter More Than Ever

This evolution also changes how funeral homes should think about online reviews.

Reviews are no longer just social proof for prospective families.

They have become training data.

Google’s AI reads reviews to understand what businesses actually do.

If families consistently mention compassionate staff, military honors, livestreaming services or personalized celebrations of life, Google’s systems become more confident that those are genuine strengths of your business.

That makes authentic reviews more valuable than ever.

At the same time, fake reviews have become dramatically riskier.

The Federal Trade Commission’s final rule prohibiting fake reviews and testimonials allows civil penalties that currently exceed $53,000 per violation in appropriate enforcement actions. Even employee reviews — even if they disclose they work for the business — can present conflict-of-interest concerns and should never be used to promote your funeral home on Google.

Instead, request reviews from:

  • Families you’ve served.
  • Preneed clients.
  • Community partners who have firsthand experience with your professionalism.

Those are exactly the kinds of authentic experiences AI systems want to see.

AI Can Help You Stay Competitive

While many funeral homes worry about AI replacing marketing professionals, the smarter strategy is using AI to become more efficient.

Three practical examples include:

Competitive backlink research: Ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude where competing funeral homes appear online.

The answer won’t replace advanced SEO tools like SEMrush, but it can quickly identify local directories, community organizations and industry websites where your competitors are earning visibility.

Instead of spending hours researching, you’ll often get 80% of the answer in under a minute.

Citation auditing: Your business information should match everywhere online.

AI can quickly compare your:

  • Google Business Profile.
  • Yelp.
  • Yellow Pages.
  • Facebook.
  • Better Business Bureau.
  • Local directories.

If your phone number, address or website differs anywhere, AI can flag those inconsistencies in minutes instead of hours.

Content gap analysis: Ask AI:

“What topics are competing funeral homes covering that our website doesn’t address?”

You may discover opportunities to create content about:

  • Veterans benefits.
  • Estate planning.
  • Green burial.
  • Grief resources.
  • Cremation options.
  • Cemetery maintenance.
  • Holiday remembrance events.

Those additions help both search engines and families better understand your expertise.

Trust Is Becoming Google’s Currency

Recent consumer research from Brand Local found that 97% of consumers believe businesses should be punished for posting fake reviews. The strongest opinions came from adults ages 35 to 60 — a demographic that represents a substantial portion of people making funeral and cemetery purchasing decisions.

Consumers increasingly expect authenticity, while platforms are investing heavily in AI to detect manipulation and reward trustworthy businesses.

That means trust is no longer just a branding concept.

It’s becoming an algorithmic ranking factor.

The Bottom Line

Don’t fight Google’s AI – learn to manage it.

The funeral homes and cemeteries that regularly monitor their Business Profiles, encourage authentic customer reviews, maintain accurate online information and use AI as a business tool rather than fearing it will be the ones families continue to find first.
