As funeral professionals prepare to vote on a proposed merger between Selected Independent Funeral Homes and the National Funeral Directors Association, the organizations have released a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions document designed to answer many of the questions members have raised about the historic proposal.
The FAQ, published as part of the organizations’ “Better Together” initiative, addresses issues ranging from governance and finances to membership benefits and the future identity of Selected. The document is intended to provide additional transparency before members cast ballots later this year.
“With a combined 253 years of serving funeral professionals, this proposed merger brings together two organizations with complementary strengths,” Christine Pepper, CEO of NFDA, and Daniel J. Ford, the association’s president, said in introducing the FAQ. “For NFDA members, that means new opportunities to connect with respected funeral professionals, while benefiting from expanded leadership development, peer learning and professional engagement opportunities. Together, the combined organization will be even better positioned to strengthen the long-term value of your NFDA membership and serve as a stronger, unified voice for the profession. This is an exciting next step for both associations and one that is embraced by both boards of directors.”
The Selected Board of Directors stated, “Like many nonprofit organizations, Selected has been navigating persistent market, financial, and operational headwinds. Independent ownership is shrinking, dues pressures have increased, and the cost of delivering high-quality programs continues to rise. Your Board and staff have explored multiple approaches to address these challenges. While each effort helped in meaningful ways, none provided the durable, long-term solution required to protect Selected’s future.
After extensive evaluation and guidance from outside experts, we have concluded that joining forces with NFDA is the strongest and most responsible path forward. This proposed merger allows us to preserve Selected’s identity, leadership, peer community, and high standards — while gaining the scale, stability, and advocacy strength needed to thrive for generations to come.”
Among the most common questions addressed is one many Selected members have asked since the proposal was unveiled: Will Selected lose its identity?
According to the FAQ, the answer is no.
The document states that Selected’s brand, signature programs and member experience are expected to continue within the merged organization. Leaders describe the merger as preserving what has made Selected distinctive while providing members with access to expanded advocacy, educational resources and business tools available through NFDA.
Another question asks whether members will be required to hold dual memberships.
The FAQ explains that membership structures would be streamlined under the combined organization, eliminating the need for separate memberships while allowing current Selected members continued access to the programs and communities they value.
The document also addresses concerns about governance, explaining that Selected leaders would have representation within the merged organization’s leadership structure, helping ensure that the culture and priorities that have defined Selected continue moving forward.
Additional questions cover financial stewardship, staffing, dues, volunteer leadership opportunities and how existing programs would transition if the merger receives member approval.
Rather than simply providing brief answers, many of the responses include background explaining how the boards evaluated the proposal and why leaders believe combining the organizations positions funeral professionals to respond more effectively to changing consumer expectations, workforce challenges and increasing regulatory complexity.
The FAQ complements information previously released by both organizations outlining the strategic rationale behind the merger.
