On a recent episode of “Two Guys and a Question,” Alan Creedy and Danny Jefferson tackled one of the most overlooked — and costly — issues in funeral service: the absence of intentional mentorship.

Drawing on a century of combined experience, they explored the cultural, financial and reputational damage that happens when seasoned professionals fail to train the next generation in a segment titled, Mentorship or Mayhem: Why Training Your Funeral Team Isn’t Optional.

“Is there intentional membership at the funeral home,” Jefferson asked. “What does it cost for the older leaders not to teach the younger ones or if they are always at odds with each other because ideological things are getting in the way?”

Creedy noted that he’s not aware of any meaningful mentorship taking place at most funeral homes.

He also observed that the busier a funeral home is, the average sale tends to go down, which is something that absolutely must change.

There is also a real cost when you don’t mentor the newer generation, Creedy said. “You are guaranteed to disappoint families if you don’t have a staff development program,” he said.
